1

Make a List

When you’re shopping for skin care products, make sure you know what you want. Are you looking for a product to help moisturize your skin, get rid of under eye bags or banish acne? Do you know what your skin type is? Note all of these things down so when you head to the store, you’ll get your questions answered and you won’t forget because you got sidetracked by the colorful new lipsticks!

2

Ask for Help

When you’re shopping for skin care products, don’t go at it alone! Enlist the help of a knowledgeable sales associate who can help you choose the right product for your skin type. Even some drugstores have reps available to help you with your purchase! Make sure you let him/her know if you have any sensitivity to certain ingredients and make your skin care concerns or desires be known! If you’re not sold on a recommendation, and you certainly don’t have to be, ask for a sample to try it out first.

3

Be Testy

In addition to asking for a sample, make sure you make use of the testers! I think this should be one of the first rules in how to shop for skin care products because you can learn a lot by trying it out. With some products, you can easily try it out and see how you like it by the time you’re ready to go so you can pick it up before heading home. Testers are also great if you want to smell the product or see if you like the texture or how fast it absorbs.

4

Think outside the Box

Another tip to keep in mind while you’re learning how to shop for skin care products is to check out the container! Is it in a container that’s easy for you to use? Does it come in amazing packaging but it’s impractical? These are things to keep in mind when you’re buying skin care products. You want something that’s easy to use and practical so it preserves and protects the product inside. For instance, some ladies hate skin care products in a jar because it’s unsanitary to stick your fingers in the product each time.

5

Research

In the world of skin care there are a lot of buzz words associated with certain products. Get to know them by researching the ingredients before you head to the store. Doing some homework ahead of time will help you narrow down your choices and you won’t end up buying something you don’t need. Once you know what you want to achieve, you’ll find that there are certain ingredients that are synonymous with certain skin conditions, like retinol for anti-aging, and it’ll make shopping much easier!

Read Reviews

Another great thing about shopping these days is that you have access to tons of reviews. You can get a good idea of what the product looks, feels and smells like by others and you don’t even have to walk into the store! While you might not agree with another person’s review 100%, you can glean valuable info, like if it caused a breakout or if it worked well on a specific skin type. On Sephora’s website you can review questions others have asked or submit your own!

7

Policy and Procedures

When you’re shopping for skin care or any beauty product, especially the expensive ones, make sure you get to know the store’s return policy before you buy. Most stores are pretty good at taking back products, just be sure to find out if you can get a refund, if you’re stuck with store credit and how many days you have to return or exchange.

Love Takes Time

Sometimes we get lucky and our skin adores a product within the first few times you use it. Other times it takes a few weeks before we see any results. Either way, the key is to be consistent! You can’t expect a skin care product to work if you only use it a few times and then toss it in a drawer. Keep at it for a few weeks then determine whether it’s working for you or not. Falling in love with a product can take time so be patient with it!

Shopping for skin care products is actually a fun process. Although there are way too many brands and products, I love trying and learning about new skin care products. Remember that you have a lot of resources at your disposal, so don't feel rushed to make a purchase you’re unsure about. What are some of your tips on shopping for skin care products?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

I don't like enlisting the help of the assistants I always feel they pressure me to buy stuff and I'm quite weak at saying no,then I find I come home with stuff I don't need and nothing of what I actually needed. One tip maybe bring a little back bone in the form of a friend lol (especially if you've hardly got one like me) to help say no to the pushy assistants at times.

I agree with a lot of this! An extra point that applied to me before I really knew my skin was that just because you get breakouts doesn't necessarily mean that you have oily skin

Great tips! Thanks!
