What do You Know about the Skin on Your Lips?

By Eliza

I’m going to share with you some facts about the skin on your lips. Why? Because it’s important to take care of that part of your body just like you do the skin on the rest of your body. Think about it this way – you skin is your body’s largest organ and covers your entire body, so you don’t want to skimp on caring for it, right? Most people don’t pay all that much attention to their lips, but the truth is that you should. So, here are some facts about the skin on your lips that will help you take the best care of them that you can.

1

No Melanin

Unlike the skin that covers the rest of your body, your lips don’t have any melanin. That’s the stuff that gives your skin its unique color. This is one of the most important facts about the skin on your lips because it helps you protect them. Without melanin, your lips are at risk of a sunburn. That means you should be wearing lip balm with SPF anytime you are outdoors. A sunburn on your lips would really hurt, but this action is an easy way to prevent it from happening.

2

Licking Dries Them out

You know that giving your lips a quick lick can relieve dryness, but the effects are temporary. The truth, according to the experts, is that your saliva is actually very drying and repeatedly licking your lips can leave them red, dry and cracked. Put some lip balm in your pocket and use it instead.

3

The Skin is Very Thin

The skin on your lips is very thin, which means it’s delicate and requires special care. You want to hydrate them often and be cautious about things that can damage them. If you’ve ever had a loose piece of skin on your lips, you know just how thin that skin really is. Proper care is important.

4

They Need Exfoliation

Obviously, you aren’t going to exfoliate your lips like you do the rest of your body. But a gentle treatment now and then is a great way to slough off dead lip skin and leave the radiant, fresh skin shining through. A simple mixture of equal parts white sugar and olive oil works perfectly. You’ll be amazed at how soft your lips are afterward.

5

They Need Water

No doubt, you’ve heard tons about how important it is to drink a lot of water each and every day. Did you know that doing so is great for lips too? If it works for the rest of your skin, you can just assume it’s going to do wonders for your lip skin too. Aim to drink when you’re thirsty and carry a water bottle with you to sip from throughout the day. High water foods, like cucumbers and melon, can also help you meet your quota.

No Sweat Glands

Sure, your upper lip might get sweaty from time to time, but your actual lips don’t have any sweat glands, and therefore can’t sweat. Sweating helps add moisture back to your skin, but your lips are more apt to dry out due to their lack of sweat glands. Again, this is where a good lip balm comes in.

They Change as You Age

You might be surprised to learn that your lips change as you get older. That includes skin that gets even thinner. What that means is that you are susceptible to wrinkles and fine lines on and around your lips. Talk to your dermatologist about a skincare routine that is appropriate for your age.

Did you learn anything new about your lips? I hope this information helps you create a routine that takes good care of your lips. Do you have any other tips to add?
