1. Get Plenty of Sleep
My dermatologist says it’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason! If you want the healthiest, most glowing skin, you’ll need to get your rest, 8 to 10 hours each night. This is her secret tip for pretty skin, but I guess it’s not a secret anymore!
2. Don’t Smoke
As if you needed another reason to quit smoking, right? Not only can it wreak deadly havoc on your body, it can ruin your skin! If you don’t smoke, great! If you so smoke, add this to your list of reasons to quit, and get started quitting today, right now! This is one tip for pretty skin that can also save your life!

3. Wear Sunscreen Every Day
Here’s another tip for pretty skin that can end up saving your life. Skin cancer kills more young women than any other form of cancer, and it’s so tragic because it’s so preventable! Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 every day, and reapply it every two hours when you’re outside. Not only will you have healthier, younger-looking skin, you’ll dramatically decrease your risk of deadly skin cancer… and hey, don’t fall for the myth that the tanner is safer than the sun. No way! It’s actually MORE dangerous!
4. Wash at the End of the Day
Your skin takes a lot of abuse every day, from pollution to sun damage to having to wear all that make-up. Reward it, and keep it looking fresh and healthy, by following this tip for pretty skin: wash it at the end of the day! I love Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple, a gentle cleanser and make-up remover. Use it, or another gentle cleanser, to remove all the impurities on your skin every single night. Don’t forget!
5. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Did you know some of the skin cleansers you use can actually irritate and age your skin? Yikes! Check the labels and make sure your skin care products (especially washes) don’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate, a popular foaming agent. Over time, using products with SLS in them can actually cause an allergic reaction, including an itchy red rash and even permanent scarring. Other ingredients to look out for: other sulfates, petrochemicals, and triclosan.

6. Don’t Squint
You forgot your sunglasses, you need updated contacts, you just think it looks cool — whatever the reason you’re squinting, stop it! This tip for pretty skin came straight from my dermatologist… squinting can actually cause wrinkles, those dreaded crow’s feet around your eyes and that vertical line between your eyes.
7. Eat Well
We are what we eat, and according to my dermatologist, if you eat a lot of junk food, your skin will tell on you. If you have a penchant for junk food, take this tip for pretty skin: switch from candies to berries for sweets, and from chips to crunchy veggies. These simple swaps, which can add the recommended 5 servings of antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies to your daily diet, will make a big impact on your pretty face.
8. De-stress
Stress can take its toll on your skin, leaving it looking dull, tired, and aged. De-stress regularly with yoga, meditation, or just a good run or cry — whatever works best for you, do it, as long as it doesn’t involve tanning or smoking or too much junk food. *wink
9. Find a Regimen That Works
I’ve had the same skin care regimen for years, and it works to keep my skin looking young and healthy. Develop your own routine, too, and stick to it! Start with a wash in the morning, then a good moisturizer and an SPF cream. Touch up and refresh at lunch, then remember to wash off and use a night cream before bed. This tip for pretty skin will become a good habit, one that will give you great skin for life.
10. Start Early
The earlier in your life you start caring for your skin, the longer it will look its best. Don’t wait until your skin looks and feels aged and tired — start your good skin habits now! This is one of the most difficult tips for pretty skin to get girls motivated, but it’s so important to develop these habits in your teens — eat well, no smoking, no tanning, get some rest, sweeties!
Look at all these tips for pretty skin… there are so many of them, and lots of them are so simple! I know I’ll never forget my SPF, but which of these tips for pretty skin will become your own new rules, and why? Or do you have another tip for pretty skin you’d like to share? Please do!
