The sooner you start to look after your skin, the healthier it will be. It’s difficult while you’re a teenager because puberty plays havoc with your hormones and you might suffer from acne, regular breakouts and even changes in skin type. For example you may have an oily t-zone that changes as you get older. Whatever skin issues you’re dealing with there are some basic tips to help you make the most of a skincare routine.

Figure out Your Skin Type

First rule for a skincare guide for newbies is to figure out what kind of skin type you have. There are numerous different types including oily skin, dry skin or a combination in patches of the two together. Determining what kind of skin you have will be essential later on for picking and purchasing products that will be beneficial to you.

Makeup Remover is Your Best Friend

You might think that a killer mascara or vibrant lipstick is your essential product, but believe me; the key to a perfect makeup routine and skincare regime is to invest in a great makeup remover. No matter what kind of skin you have, you are going to be using makeup remover every time you wear makeup, so it is really worth choosing wisely. Sleeping in your makeup is one of the worst things you can do for your skin health, so get into a regular removal routine immediately.

Make the Most of Samples

Skincare products can sometimes be quite costly, so make the most of the free samples that you can find in department stores. Not only will you be saving money, but you can also try out lots of different products and brands to see which ones are the kindest to your skin. Samples are a great way to get a broader knowledge of available products.

Start Simple

Buying lots of different skincare products can be very exciting, but the trick is to start slow and simple and build your routine once you are comfortable with the basics. Avoid intense exfoliating at the beginning and remember that washing your face too much can actually dry your skin out. Be patient and be gentle with your skin and you will start to see good results.

Consider Visiting a Dermatologist

If you are new to skincare but have struggled from a young age with particularly dry, oily or spotty skin, then it might be worth visiting your nearest dermatologist to have a consultation before you start applying lots of different products to your face. If the problem is serious enough, you may be prescribed some medications to help deal with it, as well as being advised which skincare products to use and which to avoid.

Don’t Follow Your Friends

Just because your friends use a particular brand or product for their skincare routine, it does not mean that these products are going to be perfect for you. Rather than going by what is popular, you have to listen to your body and trust what it tries to tell you about the different products you test out on your skin.

Be Patient!

Achieving the perfect skincare routine is not easy and it doesn’t all come together on your first try. With so many options to choose from, be patient and try not to get frustrated when something doesn’t work. Eventually you will find your groove and your skincare regime will become almost second nature. And remember, your skincare routine will change through the years. What works when you’re 15 won’t work when you’re 50.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with talking to significant women in your life for their skincare secrets – just remember, whatever they say, make sure it works for you.

I’m sure skincare newbies would love to hear tips from other readers so feel free to speak up ladies!

I never had acne thank the lord.

Great article! Just wondering, which account is the girl on the cover from?

I've got adult acne! I managed to escape acne as a teenager but at the age of 28 it started, I'm now 30 and I PICK at these things until they look like massive wounds on my face. I then use a ton of foundation to cover it-nightmare! I've finally gone to a dermatologist who has given me an anti biotic so it should help but as we speak, I sit with scabs on my face. So sexy 😂
