1. Cleanse Correctly

Tips for oily T-zone start with using the right cleanser. Avoid using alcohol based cleansers and limit washing your face with a gentle cleanser two times per day. Even if your face feels greasy, getting enthusiastic with washing your face can irritate or cause your skin to produce more oil, which is exactly the opposite of what we want! Look for cleansers formulated for oily skin and use a gentle exfoliator on occasion to get rid of debris.

2. Water World

When you have oily skin, it might seem like moisturizing is a bad idea but it needs to be done! Just like with over-cleansing, if we don’t properly moisturize then our skin can become dry, thereby encouraging more oil production. Choose a water-based moisturizer that’s non-comedogenic and oil-free. If you have combo skin, you might want to use a lighter moisturizer on your T-zone and a thicker formula on the rest of your face.

3. Mask It

Oily skin can really benefit from a targeted mask. Clarifying masks can help deep clean pores and absorb excess oil. Look for clay or tea tree oil masks in stores or, according to Cosmetics Cop Paula Begoun, you can “make” a really easy mask at home by applying Milk of Magnesia to your face! MoM can be used as a mask or a makeup primer so try them both out!

4. Blot It out

Once you apply makeup to oily skin, chances are you’re going to see some shine creep up. Instead of trying to cover it up with makeup, which can make your face look cakey, blot it out! There are tons of blotting papers that can soak up excess oil and get rid of shine.

5. Pick Pressed

One of makeup artist Carmindy’s tips for oily T-zone is to always choose pressed over loose powder to set your makeup. Pressed powder is ideal for oily skin since it’s on the heavier side and will soak up and control shine much better than a lightweight loose powder. She also recommends avoiding any cream based makeup like blush or foundation that can slide off of oily skin.

6. Welcome Matte

A clear tip for oily T-zone is to use an oil-free matte foundation. Using the right foundation formula can help your makeup stay on longer and avoid discoloration that typically happens with oily skin. Look for powder or mineral foundations or you might even want to try out a lightweight tinted moisturizer with a good pressed powder for a flawless finish!

7. Prime Time

One of the most important tips for oily T-zone is to prime your face before makeup. Priming your face makes a world of a difference in how your makeup looks and how long it lasts for oily skin. In addition to or in place of a primer, you might want to consider using a mattifying gel or cream on your T-zone. I like to layer a primer and a mattifyer to get a nice matte finish!

These tips for oily T-zone might seem basic, but why mess with tips that work?! Having an oily T-zone can be frustrating, but there are lots of different ways to deal with it and it’s just a matter of finding a method that works best for you! Do you have any tips or tricks in calming an oily T-zone?
