I’m sure you’ve read a ton of tips for healthy skin, but how do you know which ones actually work? No matter how many creams and serums you try, nothing beats a healthy diet. For years I tried every department store moisturizer, only to be left disappointed. It wasn’t until I started assessing my diet that I realized healthy skin comes from the inside out. If you want to have a beautiful and natural glow, check out these seven amazing tips for healthy skin.
1 Drink Water
Drinking water is one of the best tips for healthy skin. Water flushes out a ton of toxins, artificial ingredients, and other weird additives that could be clogging up your pores. Even the slightest bit of dehydration can cause fine lines, puffy eyes, and acne-ridden skin. At the very least, drink at least eight glasses of water a day to help rid your body of toxins and have healthier looking skin. Adding citrus like lemon helps facilitate the detox process, so drink up!
2 Eat Fruits and Veggies
You know you’re supposed to eat your fruits and veggies, but do you know why? Vitamins A and C aren’t just immunity powerhouses—they also help beautify your skin! The vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other phytonutrients in fruits and veggies help fight premature aging and DNA damage, two things that can change your skin’s texture and clarity. If you want to treat your skin from the inside out, make sure you eat lots of berries, leafy greens, and beta carotene-rich foods like oranges, sweet potatoes, and carrots.
3 Avoid Processed Food
Love your afternoon cookies? Or do you feel like your day is incomplete without those sour cream and onion potato chips? We all love our snacks and treats, myself included. But if you really want to get your skin in shape, you need to cut the crap! Processed food is loaded with saturated fat that can cause excess oil production, sodium that can dehydrate the skin, and lots of other artificial ingredients that can give you acne and promote aging. So if you have an event or other special moment coming up, cut back on the junk food and sweets to get a youthful glow.
4 Add Goji Berries to Smoothies
Did you know that goji berries are one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet? These little bundles of joy are one of the best things to eat for healthy skin. They’ve been used for thousands of years in Asian medicine for their healing properties, and they can definitely help reveal smooth and healthy skin. Try adding them to smoothies in the morning. You can also mix them into plain Greek yogurt, or even eat them by themselves! The possibilities are endless with this versatile and skin-saving fruit.
5 Drink Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe Vera is no longer some gooey gel you apply to sunburned skin. It’s now being used in all sorts of ways to benefit the skin and body. From upset tummies to psoriasis, Aloe Vera can considerably help many chronic health issues. I’m sure you’ve applied Aloe Vera directly to your skin, which is great, but drinking small amounts of Aloe Vera juice is also beneficial. Consuming as little as an ounce (i.e. one shot glass) can provide you with a ton of health benefits. Aloe Vera is super hydrating, which can give you softer and suppler skin.
6 Don’t Be Afraid of Healthy Fats
Many women try to cut added fat from their diets to stay slim. While it’s true that too much fat can lead to weight gain, a diet that lacks fat for a prolonged period of time can lead to dry and cracked skin. Some experts argue that consistent consumption of healthy fats can actually help your skin maintain its elasticity and stay younger longer. Look for healthy fats in a variety of foods like avocados, chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, and coconut oil, to name a few.
7 Skip the Fast Food and Restaurants
Everyone has had that tempting moment after a night of drinking when all you want to do is sink your teeth into a fast food cheeseburger and fries. It might feel like a satisfying meal, but that feeling is short-lived when you wake up to a face full of breakouts the next morning. Let’s get one thing straight, ladies: fast food isn’t really food. It’s a food-like product that provides no nutritional value whatsoever. There’s no need to eat at these junk food places. You’re much better off going home, popping an Ibuprofen or two, and getting some rest.
