1

Aloe Vera

I spent some of my growing up years living in Phoenix and we had an aloe vera plant growing in our backyard. It looked nice, but it also came in handy when we inevitably got a sunburn. If you grow one of your own, all you have to do is snap off one of the stalks and squeeze it a bit to release the gel. Spread the gel onto your skin and let it soak in. You’ll feel relief in no time and that makes aloe vera one of the best things to soothe a sunburn.

2

Cool Water

Ice cold water isn’t going to do you any favors, but cool water can offer relief. Soak in a a cool bath or swimming pool for a few minutes or apply cool compresses to the sunburned areas. This is one of the easiest ways to make yourself more comfortable after too much sunshine. After all, you always have cool water at no cost, right?

3

Green Tea

Much like you’d use cool water, green tea offers benefits to sunburned skin. According to the experts at Best Health magazine, green tea reduces ultraviolet damage and lowers inflammation, which will make you much more comfortable. Brew your green tea, cool it slightly, then soak compresses in the liquid. Lay the compresses on your sunburned skin and get ready to find relief.

4

Hydrocortisone Cream

One percent hydrocortisone cream is effective for a range of conditions. I keep a tube in my medicine cabinet at all times. Not only does the cream work for skin itchiness or eczema, but for many people, it can make sunburn less painful and uncomfortable. You can get it over the counter at most drugstores and it’s not all that expensive either.

5

Cucumbers

You’ve probably heard of using cucumbers for taking care of puffy undereye bags, but you can also use it to soothe sunburn. Slice a cucumber and gently rub a couple of slices over your sunburned skin. The coolness of the vegetable offers instant relief. Leave the cucumbers resting on your skin for long lasting relief.

Vinegar

Vinegar is great for sunburn because it helps ease some of the pain and itchiness that sunburn can cause. It’s a perfect alternative to over the counter pain medications if you prefer not to take them. Again, you can use compresses soaked in vinegar or you can add some to your bath and soak for a while.

7

Lotion

If all you have at home is a bottle of lotion, you’re in luck! Your favorite type of lotion won’t get rid of a sunburn, but it will certainly make you feel better. Not only can it cool your skin, but it helps control the itching that often accompanies sunburn. Simply slather a coat or two on periodically through the day until the sunburn goes away.

How do you treat a sunburn? I try to always wear sunscreen so I don’t get one, but if I do, I like cool water and lotion the best. Which one will you try first?
