In fact, according to many dermatologists, a tan is a sign of sun damage. I’m not saying you have to be completely pale all summer long, but it pays to consider these beach skincare tips so you can take the best care of your body while you enjoy your time by the sea.
1. Wear Sunscreen
You knew that would be the first of the beach skincare tips, didn’t you? Well it definitely tops the list of important things to do anytime you spend time in the sun. Be sure to cover all your exposed skin and reapply every couple of hours. You also need to slather on more sunscreen anytime you get wet and then towel off. Choose broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
2. Wear Clothing
I know that advice sounds funny because of course you’re going to wear your bathing suit, right? What I mean is that you should cover up with more than that unless you’re actually in the water swimming. Wear a loose dress cover-up or some board shorts and a cute t-shirt when you’re lounging in the sun. A wide-brimmed sun hat is also important. This helps keep more of the sun’s rays off your skin.
3. Seek Shade
The sun is generally strongest between the hours of 10am and 2pm, so you should limit your time during those hours. Try to find some shade or go indoors because this time period is when you are most likely to burn or experience aging damage as a result of the sun. If you must be outside, be sure to wear lots of sunscreen and stay covered up as much as possible.
4. Bring Lots of Water
You might be cooled off after a dip in the ocean, but the heat is steadily drawing moisture from your skin, so make sure you arrive at the beach with a cooler full of cold water bottles. Sip regularly throughout the day to help replace all the moisture you lose in the heat of the sun. Iced tea is also beneficial, but limit soda and alcohol, which can exacerbate dehydration.

Even if you drink plenty of fluids and don’t have a sunburn or a tan, your skin still loses moisture in the sun and heat. That’s why you should always slather on a rich cream after your time on the beach comes to an end. That way you can combat dry skin and make sure the skin all over your body stays healthy and radiant.

Using cold compresses is an easy way to soothe skin after a day in the sunshine. It will reduce inflammation and refresh tired summer skin. Wet washcloths are the easiest way to make a cold compress. Chill them in the refrigerator and replace as needed.

Food could never replace sunscreen for sun protection, but there are some foods that naturally help. Pack them in your cooler and nibble on them throughout the day to boost your armor.
