Alcohol is fun in moderation. An occasional glass of red wine is even good for you (check this out 9 Excellent Reasons to Love Red Wine ... @Jessica) But overindulge – and like with anything else done to excess – there are consequences. As well as affecting your liver, the nastier side of alcohol can show on your skin. This is what you should know about the effects along with some ways of dealing with it.
The most striking of the ways alcohol affects your skin are a reddish tone, visibly enlarged pores, droopy eyelids, emphasized spots or lines between the brows, line and wrinkles underneath the eyes, dehydration around the cheeks and in some severe cases, very deep nasolabial folds. If any of these symptoms are something that you recognize in your own skin, then it’s time to start taking more care and you can do so by following these steps…
2. Booze Free Days
It is recommended that at least four days of your week should be alcohol free days, and that ideally, you should never drink two days running. Just a single drink can cause disturbance to your gut lining, and you need to give appropriate time for this disturbance to settle and repair itself before your expose your gut to more alcohol again.
3. Go Pure
When you do drink, you should be going for drinks that are as ‘pure’ as possible in the sense that they do not contain much glucose. Try to avoid drinks like beer, vodka, whiskey and even some brands of gin. Opt instead for gluten-free spirits like tequila, rum or potato based vodka. Watch out for wine, as although it does not contain gluten, it can be very sugary depending on which variety you choose. The very best option is a grain-free vodka with soda.
4. Avoid Sugary Mixers
Sure, a rum and coke might sound like a tasty idea, but you really want to be avoiding mixers that are so sugar based. Opt instead for soda or water as your mixer, as sugar is really bad for the integrity and overall health of your gut lining. Any mixer that is not sugary should always be your first choice.
A lot of alcohol-related skin problems can be traced back to a severe lack of hydration. You should always drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink that you consume, as the water will help to immediately start counteracting the disturbances in your gut. Not to mention the added benefit of hydration helping to stave off the potential of a nasty hangover.
6. Red over White
If you are wine girl, then my best advice is to always choose red over white if you have the option. Red wine contains lots of antioxidants, magnesium, polyphenols and flavonoids that are good for the skin, therefore the alcohol is much kinder than white which does not boast as many positive properties. Wines from Italy and the South West of France are known to have the highest levels of antioxidants, so look out for those countries in the labels when you are shopping!
7. Organic Wine
Whilst regular grapes often come in to contact with pesticides, this is not the case with organically produced wine. They are also free of commercial yeasts, and these kinds of things can really affect a person who is prone to ‘wine face’. If you ever feel tight in the chest, have a cough or a runny nose after drinking wine, then you might want to switch to the organic, sulfite free alternatives that are widely available.
