Table of contents:

  7. Stop smoking

1 Get Some Sleep

When you’re dealing with under eye circles and bags, the last thing you want to do is skimp on sleep! Lacking sleep causes our skin to look tired, discolored and dull which can make our blood vessels much more visible. Make it a priority to get at least 7-8 hours of beauty sleep each night to prevent under eye circles and bags.

2 Cover up

We all know how important it is to protect our skin from the sun to prevent fine lines and wrinkles but there’s actually more to it. Wearing sunscreen and rocking your shades and hat actually prevents extra pigment from growing in your under eye area so your skin doesn’t appear darker. This is really important in preventing dark circles and preventing any discoloration from getting worse.

3 Cut out Stimulants

Under eye circles can often be caused by taking in too much of a stimulant like caffeine or alcohol. I know, we need our morning coffee in order to function or need a drink to unwind, that’s all good. But, if you want to prevent getting or exacerbating the dark circles under your eyes, definitely cut back on them as much as you can.

4 Get Elevated

Sometimes the dark circles we see under our eyes are a result of fluid collection. According to Dr. Robert Schmerling, lying horizontally can encourage fluid collection and vein dilation which darkens the skin even more. To combat the effect of sleeping horizontally, try elevating your head with an extra pillow to prevent fluid collection and puffy eyes.

5 Take Your Vitamins

Vitamins aren’t just for kids and older folks, even a young whippersnapper like yourself can benefit from a daily dose of vitamins! Sometimes when we’re deficient in certain vitamins and nutrients it can show through our skin. If you feel your diet is lacking vitamins, try supplementing with a daily multi-vitamin and start incorporating more healthy foods in your diet!

6 Get Tested

Some of our daily habits could be to blame for our dark circles and bags but sometimes it’s due to genetics. Yup, under eye circles just might run in our families or it could be from allergies. See your doctor about food or environmental allergies to see if it’s contributing to your skin woes so you can stay far away from things that causes an allergic reaction.

7 Stop Smoking

If you need to add another reason to put down the cigs, quit smoking to save your skin! Smoking makes your skin thinner, slightly pigmented and ages your prematurely all of which doesn’t help the cause! I know it’s hard to quit smoking but there are lots of stop smoking methods and places that can help. Check out the American Lung Association’s site for more information on how to quit lung.org. You can do it!
