Preventing fine lines and wrinkles is something I’ve spent more time looking into now that I’ve hit my 30s. As they say, it’s all downhill from here. Well, I don’t want that to be my outlook. Who says I can’t still look young? I’m taking a stand and if you’re with me, read on. You’re about to discover some easy tips for preventing fine lines and wrinkles.
1. Use Sunscreen
I know, you’ve heard it a million times, but that’s because sunscreen is one of the best products for preventing fine lines and wrinkles. Unprotected sun exposure can really age a person by creating sunspots and lines. Plus, it also raises your risk of skin cancer. So, slather on an SPF each and every day. I buy a facial moisturizer that contains it so I can use one product without looking all shiny. Don’t forget your ears and neck. You can then apply your make-up as usual. See – easy!
2. Avoid Cigarettes
Not only do they increase your risk of lung cancer, but cigarettes are a major contributor to fine lines and wrinkles. Each time you take a drag, you pull the skin around your mouth in the same way. Over time, the skin gets used to it and you start to notice that those lines stay put. Also, cigarettes deprive your blood vessels of nitric oxide, which reduces skin flexibility. So put those cigarettes down and back away. Talk to your doctor if you need help quitting.
I know as well as anyone how hard it can often be to get to bed and sleep for a reasonable amount of time. After all, kids, a job and household obligations, not to mention hobbies, time with friends and family events can really suck your time, leaving it very late when you finally make your way to bed. However, making sleep a priority is important because not getting enough shut-eye messes with your body’s production of cortisol, a stress hormone that breaks down skin cells. Most adults need seven to nine hours every night, so do your best to get at least that. Try to sleep on your back so your face isn’t creased while you slumber.
4. Limit Sugar
I love dessert as much as the next person, but too much sugar breaks down collagen and can leave you with fine lines and wrinkles. You don’t have to nix it completely, but it’s a good idea to limit yourself to just a few teaspoons of added sugar each day. Fruit has plenty of natural sugar and is good for you, so opt for it to top off your meal and your body will thank you for many more years.
5. Eat Nutritious Foods
By including a variety of items from each food group in your meal plans, you can boost your nutrient intake. Many nutrients, including vitamins A, C and E and antioxidants, are important for skin health and appearance. By making sure you eat plenty of them, you can fight the free radical damage that appears on your face in the form of fine lines and wrinkles.
Choosing the right moisturizer can pump your skin full of ingredients that help prevent signs of aging. Look for one that contains anti-wrinkle ingredients and apply it gently according to package directions. Moisturizer is a great way to keep your skin hydrated, which can cut down on lines and creases by keeping your skin plumped up and supple. Retinoids and alpha-hydroxy acid are ingredients to look for.
7. Drink More Water
Water is one of the best ways to keep your skin hydrated, which helps it look fresh, radiant and young. Carry a water bottle with you and sip from it regularly. Add foods high in water, such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges and lettuce, to your diet as well. If you exercise or the temperature is very hot, drink extra water to counteract what you lose when you sweat.
