7 Ingredients in Skincare That Everyone is Getting Excited about ...

Do you feel that every time a new beauty product ad runs on TV there are some new ingredients in skincare all the companies are raving about? With regularity, a new ingredient with an unmentionably long, unpronounceable name is about to be the answer to all our skincare dreams or, an ingredient we’ve known about for ages suddenly becomes flavor of the month. I’ve been reading about recent noise surrounding some ingredients in skincare. Wanna hear about them?

1

Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid (NDGA)

But of course, some ingredients in skincare have to have those long and complicated names companies adore and customers abhor. This one looks to be one of the newest acne busters on the ingredients block. It is a potent antioxidant that is derived from the creosote bush. This plant is water hardy and is found in many desert areas as it is able to withstand long moisture-free periods. Clinical trials have shown it can shut down the production of sebum (one of the root causes of acne) by more than 50% and also reduce inflammation by over 70%. Look out for NDGA on acne-fighting products.

Pomegranate

It sometimes follows that superfood equals super ingredient, and skincare chemists and cosmetologists are now saying that pomegranate is as good for our skincare regimen as it is for our diet. Those bright red jewel seeds are packed to bursting with Vitamin C and antioxidants that preserve the vibrancy of your skin and make it stronger and more resilient. Weleda claim their Pomegranate Firming Face Serum reduces wrinkles by up to 29% in 28 days.

3

Snail Slime

We know that clever Asian ladies have been using all sorts of what Westerners believe to be weird methods of and ingredients in skin care for centuries and gradually, we’re coming round to their way of thinking. A snail slime facial is not uncommon in Japan but, if you can’t face the thought of snails crawling over your face, you can get snail slime in cream form. The mucus that is snail “slime” is said to help remove dry and dead skin cells and aid scarring, giving you a brighter, more even complexion.

4

Glycolic Acid

I’ve just told you about snail slime, and the reason that is booming one off the lauded skincare ingredients is because it contains glycolic acid. It isn’t a new ingredient, in fact it’s been around for years, but what is new is the way it is being used. The processing of the ingredient has made it more refined and sophisticated. Maria Hatzistefanis who is the founder of Rodial (rodial.co.uk) says that Glycolic acid … “helps retexture the skin’s surfaces, working to break the bonds that hold dead skin cells together to reveal brighter, smoother and younger looking skin).

5

Soy

It’s long been known that soy helps stimulate cell renewal. Now however, scientists and skincare experts have discovered that one of the plant hormones in soy – called genistein – is majorly beneficial to the production of collagen, helping eliminate wrinkles and plumping out fine lines. Nivea is one of the brands upping its usage of soy as one of its ingredients in skincare products. For example, you’ll find it in their Vital Multi Active Anti-Age Day Cream.

Glycans

Glycans are something the skincare community is making noise about recently. Glycans exist naturally on the skin’s surface and are a neurotransmitter that communicates between the different skin layers (dermis and epidermis) telling them when to produce more collagen. This communication lessens as you age so a booster isn’t going to go amiss. Boosting glycans ultimately will help reduce the effect of wrinkles.

7

Kale Extract

If you’re a fan of Heather Williams’s articles, you’ll be aware of just how much she promotes yummy, nutritional kale as an essential for your healthy diet. Kale may be the veggie of the moment, but is also a new favorite among skincare ingredients. It’s the packed punch of vitamins like A, C and K that give kale terrific anti-inflammatory properties which help to reduce swelling and redness. It is also really helpful in maintaining the skin’s elasticity, making that youthful complexion stick around for longer.

Are you impressed by any of these “new” skincare ingredients? Which ones will you be looking out for next time you do your beauty shopping?
