1

Take Great Care of Your Skin

human hair color, blond, beauty, selfie, girl, Prevention should always be the goal, but pimples and blemishes are often unavoidable. It’s important to have a thorough skin care regimen that you follow every morning and night. At the very minimum, you should cleanse and moisturize your skin twice daily. Make sure to remove your makeup before cleansing at night; otherwise, washing your face with cleanser will only remove the makeup and not actually cleanse the skin. Both are necessary for healthy skin.

2

Prep the Skin

eyebrow, beauty, black hair, lip, girl, You should always apply makeup to clean, moisturized skin. To enhance the appearance of your makeup and increase its staying power, apply a makeup primer before putting on your makeup. Primers have a silicone base that helps fill in lines and evens out the surface texture of the skin. It makes your makeup stay on longer and stay true to its actual color.

3

Choose the Right Color of Concealer

eyebrow, beauty, chin, forehead, black hair, Choosing a concealer that does not properly match your skin tone will only make the acne scar or blemish stand out more. You want to choose a shade of concealer that is the most similar to that of your natural skin color. If you can’t find an exact match, 1 shade lighter than your natural color is the next best choice. Never choose a darker shade for hiding blemishes.

4

Apply Concealer Sparingly

beauty, lip, black hair, chin, long hair, Applying too much concealer can make acne scars more visible or cause the makeup to look cakey. Apply just enough to spread a light layer over the area you need to conceal. Remember that you can always add more, but it’s more difficult to take away what you’ve already applied.

5

Apply Concealer with Your Fingertips

eyebrow, beauty, human hair color, black hair, forehead, My favorite way to apply concealer on myself is to use my fingertips. I like to use creamy concealers, so applying them with your fingertips helps warm the product so that it goes on more easily. Your ring finger applies the perfect amount of pressure for applying concealer — less pressure than that of your pointer finger, but more than your pinky finger. Apply the concealer using light, quick tapping motions to evenly blend out the concealer. Just make sure your hands are clean first!

Apply Foundation First

human hair color, beauty, eyebrow, black hair, long hair, I have found the most effective way to conceal acne scars is to first apply your foundation and then follow with concealer. When I apply concealer before my foundation, I tend to wipe away a lot of the concealer with my foundation brush or sponge. This causes me to use more product, because I always have to go back and apply more concealer. So save yourself the trouble and start with foundation, then follow with concealer!

7

Set Concealer with Powder

hair, eyebrow, human hair color, beauty, hairstyle, For ultimate staying powder and concealment, always set your foundation and concealer with a powder. Powder keeps everything in place and allows it to last throughout the day. Make sure you are finished blending your foundation and concealer before you apply the powder. Once powder is on, everything is there to stay.

8

Green Cancels Red

eyebrow, lip, cheek, beauty, skin, If you have a blemish that is very red, try applying a green concealer before your regular concealer. Green and red are complementary colors that cancel each other out when they are combined equally. You’ll only need a tiny bit of green concealer…you don’t want to have green spots! Apply your regular colored concealer or a bit of foundation over the green concealer to help combat any greenish tint to the skin. Typically, this is for more extreme cases but can really be helpful!

9

Try Some Toner

eyebrow, lip, beauty, human hair color, cheek, There is some debate about the need for toner. However, if you want to cover acne scars, many experts say it's an important step. The toner will help remove any residue left behind by your facial cleanser, giving you a perfectly clean slate for getting your concealing make-up in place to hide your scars. Use a small amount of toner on a cotton ball to get the job done right.

10

MOISTURIZE

eyebrow, face, cheek, lip, skin, It might seem counterintuitive to go to all the trouble of washing and using toner only to put on facial cream. However, if you let your skin get too dry, it produces more sebum, or natural skin oil, which will only make acne worse. Use a lightweight moisturizer and massage it in gently, allowing it to soak in for a few minutes before adding make-up to your face.

11

Use a Scar Cream

hair, eyebrow, human hair color, hairstyle, black hair, Maybe you've seen commercials for scar cream. It's formulated to help break up scar tissue and reduce the appearance of acne scars. Dab a bit of the cream on your face each night after washing. It won't work overnight, but you should start to see the scars fading after a couple of months of regular use. You can find inexpensive scar creams over the counter at most drugstores.

12

See a Professional

eyebrow, beauty, human hair color, lip, chin, Sometimes it takes intervention to get the results you want. Head to a qualified dermatologist for a laser treatment or chemical peel. These procedures effectively remove the top few layers of your skin, helping reduce the appearance of acne scars. You may have to get several rounds of both treatments to make the scars almost invisible, but this is a viable option if you have dark or deep acne scars.

13

Stick to a Routine

hair, eyebrow, human hair color, beauty, hairstyle, Of course you'll be happy when your acne scars are less noticeable, but don't slack off on your routine. Be sure you are washing adequately each day and using products that are designed for acne prone skin. This way you won't get new breakouts that leave behind scars, which would only mean starting all over again.

14

Layer

beauty, hairstyle, fashion accessory, fashion model, black hair, When you've put on your foundation and concealer, if you feel like you still need more coverage, layer up! Of course there's a line that you shouldn't cross so that it doesn't look cakey, but use as much as you need to cover up what you need. Once you've put on your finishing powder you should see a significant difference.

15

Filler Injections

hair, human hair color, hairstyle, wig, black hair, This is a more permanent solution. If your scars are very deep and you have indentations in your skin, you may want to consider getting filler injections. This procedure involves fillers being injected into the skin to raise the indentations and level out the skin's surface. They do offer dermal fillers, which are a temporary procedure. With these you will need to have them re-injected once a treatment wears off.

16

Be Generous

eyebrow, beauty, human hair color, black hair, long hair, Without being cakey, you want to make sure to get coverage. This may not work for everyone, but why not try it? Some people with acne scars see benefits from filling their indentations with concealer. Sounds crazy right? Some people see great results and others think it looks like they're wearing too much makeup. Try it and see what works for you!

17

Silicone-based Primer

eyebrow, beauty, lip, cheek, black hair, Using a silicone-based primer can help to fill in some of the indentations that come along with acne scars. This will help to create a smoother base for you to work on. This will help prevent your foundation from pooling in your indented areas. Having a primer that evens out the indentations will be very helpful in concealing your scars!
