7 Easy Things to do to Take Care of the Skin on Your Hands ...

By Eliza

The skin on your hands is just as delicate as the skin on your face and it shows your age just as easily too, so it’s important to take care of the skin on your hands. The backs of your hands will show wrinkles and age spots much like your facial skin, but that doesn’t mean you have to give in to these effects of aging. There are plenty of simple things you can to do to easily take care of the skin on your hands. None of these tips will take you too much time, but you’ll be glad you put in the effort.

1

Wash Them

Washing your hands keeps them free of nasty bacteria and germs that can get into scrapes and under your fingernails, leaving you with unattractive infections. At the same time, keeping your hands clean is an important step in the proper way to take care of the skin on your hands. Much like you wash your face every day to remove products and slough away dead skin cells, you should do the same for your hands. I use my facial cleanser on my hands in the shower once a day in addition to washing them after using the bathroom, before cooking, etc.

2

Exfoliate

A good exfoliation now and then is a great way to get rid of dead skin cells and residue buildup. Think about how often you put on lotion or use your hands to apply sunscreen or make-up. By exfoliating them now and then, you get rid of all that stuff while also getting rid of dull, old skin and leaving the youthful, fresh skin underneath shining through. My favorite exfoliating scrub is a ½ and ½ mixture of olive oil and white sugar.

3

Wear Sunscreen

Because the backs of your hands are especially prone to aging, it’s a good idea to wear sunscreen on them. Of course, you never want to spend long amounts of time outside without your sunscreen on, but think about how much exposure they get while you’re driving too. I know that sunscreen can be greasy and uncomfortable on your hands, so I use a bit of my daily facial cream with SPF 30 in it on my hands in the morning. The type of sunscreen you use isn’t as important as just being sure to slather it on.

4

Moisturize

One of the best things you can do for your hands is to moisturize them often. I typically apply lotion each time I wash my hands and there’s a good reason for that. Experts say that your skin does a better job of locking in the moisture if you put lotion on when your skin is slightly damp. Carry a tube of lotion with you as a reminder and keep a bottle handy on your sinks at home too.

5

Choose the Right Products

If you have very dry skin, you may need something more powerful than your run of the mill bottle of lotion. Creams are recommended as better for people who have dry, chapped or cracked skin. If you have normal skin, on the other hand, you can likely choose any product you prefer. If you have certain skin conditions, such as eczema, talk to your dermatologist about the right products for you.

Wear Gloves

Of course, you probably wear gloves when the weather is cold outside. That’s a great idea because extreme temperatures can really do a number on the skin on your hands. However, you should also wear gloves when you use harsh cleaning supplies or work in the garden. That will protect them from chemicals that can damage the skin and will keep sun exposure at bay too.

7

See Your Doctor

If you ever notice new spots or such on your hands, you can always consult with your dermatologist. Not only can she give you tips and tricks to help you prevent further damage, but she probably has all sorts of treatments that can minimize the appearance of aging on your hands. At the same time, anytime you notice anything strange on your skin, your dermatologist can tell you what to do.
