Your hands are exposed to everything. They’re open to the elements, they’re regularly dunked in water and they get covered in all sorts of things from ink to makeup. They really do need some extra special TLC. It isn’t enough to just slather on hand cream, although that’s important to do regularly. A real treat is a DIY hand scrub. As well as smelling amazing, it will exfoliate, removing damaged and dead skin cells, making your hands soft and just look and feel better. Here are my favorite DIY hand scrubs:
1. Coconut Oil Salt Scrub with Rosemary and Mint
You’ll really notice the difference in the softness of your hands after using this scrub. It’s a great combination of coconut oil which is one of nature’s best natural softeners and salt, which is a great exfoliator.
1 cup coarse sea salt
⅓ cup coconut oil
1 tsp peppermint extract or 10 drops peppermint oil
10 drops rosemary oil
¼ cup jojoba (or olive) oil
1tsp chopped dried mint and rosemary
Simply mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until well combined. Store in an airtight container and it’s ready to use. (psst – it’s also great for elbows and heels)
2. Rose Sugar Scrub
Roses smell divine. And, they also contain vitamin C which makes them a good antioxidant ingredient for DIY hand scrubs.
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
½ cup coconut oil
5 drops od rose essential oil.
Few drops red food coloring
Simple mix all the ingredients together and store in a screw top jar.
3. Lavender Vanilla Salt Scrub
Who doesn’t love the smell of lavender? And this scrub is so pretty to look at too.
2 cups Epsom salts
1 cup coarse sea salt
½ cup olive oil (or coconut oil)
1 tbsp vanilla oil
15 drops lavender essential oil
Few drops of red food coloring
Few drops blue food coloring
Mix together the salts and oil. Then add in the vanilla and lavender oil. Mix again. Now add in the food coloring and mix until you get a lovely purple color. Store in a lidded container.
4. Pink Himalayan Salt Scrub
You already know the benefits of coconut oil, but this scrub ups the ante on the moisturizing ability because it also contains jojoba oil. Use liberally for super soft skin.
1oz jojoba oil
1oz coconut oil
4oz Pink Himalayan salt
20 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil
Combine the two oils with the salt and mix well. Add in the essential oils and mix. Store in a lidded jar.
5. Gardener’s Hand Scrub
So called because it is for hard-working hands, the main active ingredient in this scrub is lemon. Its vitamin C can help boost collagen production and it brightens skin.
¾ cup granulated sugar
1 fresh lemon
1 tbsp olive oil
Remove the zest from the lemon and then cut in half. Juice one half. Put the zest and juice in a bowl with the sugar. Add the olive oil and mix. Keep in a jar in the fridge.
6. Chocolate Hand Scrub
No you can’t eat it – you’ll just have to be content with the delicious smell. As well as tasting great, the caffeine in chocolate stimulates circulation and blood flow. Be sure to use dark chocolate powder because it contains antioxidants which increase skin elasticity and reduces skin ageing.
1 cup brown sugar
4 tbsp cocoa powder
½ cup oil of your choice
1 tsp vanilla extract
Put the sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla in a bowl. Gradually add the oil, mixing as you go. When it is a thick paste, put into a lidded container.
7. Green Tea Sugar Scrub
Almost as good topically as it is for your innards, green tea is loaded with antioxidants and has antibacterial properties.
⅛ cup cooled brewed green tea
1 cup granulated sugar
⅛ cup grapeseed oil (or other carrier oil)
1 green tea bag
Put the sugar and oil in a bowl and gradually add the tea, mixing all the time. When combined, tear open the tea bag and empty the leaves into the mix. Stir to combine. Store in a lidded container in the fridge.
Have fun making and using your hand scrubs.
