Skip Foam

Some of the best anti-aging tips are the ones that we don’t think about, like changing the type of skin care products you use. For example, I have a distaste for cream cleansers so I typically buy foam or gel cleansers. Then I learned that foam cleansers are harsh, even for my oil slick skin! So if you’re currently using a foam cleanser, consider switching to a different type that’s more sensitive to your skin!

2

Slather Sunscreen

No matter what type of skin you have, sunscreen is an absolute must! Even if you’ve never paid much attention to sun protection in the past, it’s never too late to start now! Sun damage compounds the aging process by penetrating the outer and inner layers of skin. Start slathering on sunscreen to fight sun damage and keep your skin looking young! Worried about clogged pores? Look for sunscreens that are made for oily skin!

3

Don’t over-cleanse

Having oily skin can make us want to wash our faces often because it tends to feel greasy, but we don’t want to get too enthusiastic with the cleanser! Sure, you want to have clean skin and keep oil away, but washing our face too often can actually leads to increased oil production. Over-cleansing can dry out skin and dry skin can make the signs of aging more noticeable. Wash your face twice a day, but use blotting papers during the day to keep oil away!

4

Nourish Skin

One of the top anti-aging substances we can incorporate into our skin care routine is antioxidants! Antioxidants help prevent oxidizing and help our skin stay young and supple, so it’s definitely a skin care essential for oily skin. Look for oil-free moisturizers that contain them and eat a diet high in antioxidants with berries, beans and veggies to feed and nourish your skin!

5

Shun Sugar and Smoke

If you’re a smoker or consider yourself someone with a huge sweet tooth, you’re definitely going to want to reconsider your vice or sugary habit. Smoking is horrible for you overall, so quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for yourself. And if you love to indulge in sugar, try cutting back. Studies have shown that consuming lots of sugar over long periods can cause skin to age and dull due to a process in our body called glycation. Curb your candy intake and indulge in fruits and healthier treats for your skin’s sake!

Get Beauty Sleep

This is another anti-aging tip that applies to all skin types, get your beauty sleep! Sleep is extremely important to not only the condition of our skin but our overall health. It’s best to sleep on your back since sleeping on your face can mechanically wrinkle the skin and age skin at a faster rate. Aim for around 7 hours of sleep each night to help your body repair and look its best!

7

Limit Alcohol

You’re probably thinking that this list of tips is turning into the most restrictive and boring list ever! Don’t worry, you don’t have to completely give up alcohol, just try to moderate consumption. Drinking alcohol dilates your blood vessels and increases blood flow near the skin’s surface. Normally, increased blood flow is a good thing but in this case it makes your skin appear sallow, so keep cocktails to a minimum!

8

Consume Omega-3 Fatty Acids

In addition to consuming antioxidants, another important nutrient for your skin are omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s decrease inflammation in the skin, revitalizes and repairs skin from the inside. Get your fill of this beneficial fat by eating foods like salmon, halibut, eggs, soy milk and yogurt. See, following an anti-aging regimen doesn’t mean you’ll be deprived; there are plenty of delicious foods that benefit our skin!

There are a few anti-aging tips that are specific for oily skin but overall, the culprits behind premature aging are the same for all skin types. Maintain a good sleep schedule, eat healthy and hydrate and protect your skin for healthy and youthful-looking skin for many years to come! What are your anti-aging tips?
