1

Topical Retinol

This is a product you’ve probably heard about as a way to mask aging, but it also happens to be one of the most effective acne fighters on the market. Retinol helps get rid of dead skin cells, which can hide the appearance of acne scars and keep your pores clear to prevent future breakouts. Make sure the retinol product you choose is designed for acne.

2

Salicylic Acid

Perhaps one of the most common ingredients for fighting acne is salicylic acid. It’s found in many products and works by clearing oil, dead skin and bacteria from your pores, which is a great way to keep them clean and blemish free. This ingredient is very effective for blackheads, but is also a great pick for pimples as well. Look for it in exfoliating products or facial cleansers.

3

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a great choice if you want something more natural than traditional chemical acne treatments. This is an essential oil that has strong antiseptic properties, which means it kills the bacteria on your face that leads to acne in the form of blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. It doesn’t produce results as quickly as other products, but it doesn’t load you with chemicals either, if that’s something that’s important to you.

4

Glycolic Acid

It’s not as harsh as it sounds and glycolic acid is top notch for battling blackheads, whiteheads and large pores that get clogged and turn into pimples. This ingredient helps slough off the top layer of your skin, which helps wipe out your pores and leaves them squeaky clean and blemish free. Look for it in a wide variety of facial cleansers and exfoliating products. You might also find glycolic acid in facemasks.

5

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide isn’t the same as the stuff you use to clean your wounds with, though it does have a similar make-up. It works by killing bacteria in your pores as well as letting oxygen into them. That combines to create one powerful acne fighter that can battle pimples and most any type of blemish on your face. It doesn’t work as well for severe cases of acne so be aware of that before you use it.

Sulfur

I know, I was a little concerned about this product too. I’ll leave it up to you whether you think you want to give it a try, but it has been shown to absorb oil on your face as well as get rid of the bacteria that leads to acne. It’s also great for cleansing and exfoliating your face. It’s perfect if your top acne problem is clogged pores.

7

Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide delivers a powerful one-two punch that both cleans your pores and keeps oil production in check. It’s widely available in sunscreen, but you can also find it in some other skincare products too.

If you notice that your acne gets worse or doesn’t respond to treatment, it’s time to make an appointment with your dermatologist. How do you control acne?

I've suffered from acne all my life (from teens into my thirties). I use an acne cleanser (Neutrogena or Murad) and a regular cleanser so my skin doesn't dry out. I also like La Roche Posay (the French skincare line) - they have a great range for acne sufferers. Tea tree oil is great and has worked for me on zits that crop up when you don't want them too and it does not dry out your skin like Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid does. Definitely see a dermatologist if your acne is bad. I consulted one 5 years ago and took the dreaded drug, Accutane, but my skin is miles better for it now. There are other options too and they can walk you through them! Don't suffer with acne because it's not fun.

Salicylic Acid is actually really horrible for your skin. It sometimes helps acne clear but it almost always comes back. Also, I read about it and almost every site said scientists are thinking it may cause cancer or other skin conditions. Sorry, I just wanted to warn everyone it's a very irritative ingredient and it's pretty ad for you.

For me Tru. Skin worked. I think it is the best product for acne and skin break outs.

pro active worked for me and a lot of ppl I know. using drugs like marijuana, meth, cocaine make ur skin brake out badly so stay clean??
