Your Skin is Always Changing

The number one reasons why you shouldn't worry about your skin type is that it isn't always the same. There isn’t really much point in settling on a specific group of products for yourself because the truth is that your skin type is always changing. It’s not like eye colour, you aren’t born with a certain type of skin that will remain that way for the rest of your life. Your skin type is constantly evolving as you age and as you alter your living and working environments. Here a few things that can influence your skin type on any given day:

• Menstrual Cycle – the oiliness of your skin can be drastically different depending on what day of your menstrual cycle you are on.
• Diet – the foods that you choose to put into your body can have a significant bearing on your skin health.
• Medications – medications for other bodily ailments can often have side effects that are related to your skin.
• Climate – your skin is very likely to be very different depending on the time of year, for example, the difference in weather between summer and winter.
• Stress levels – our lives are full of stress at certain times, and this will often manifest in a breakout on the skin.
• Hormone levels – the state of your skin will always be dictated by your hormone levels at any given time, including progesterone, thyroid, serotonin, cortisol, and estrogen.

We All Have a Skin Combination

Another key reason why you shouldn’t get too worried about finding a set of products that cater to a specific skin type is that, on the whole, all of our faces are made up of a combination of two or three different types rather just being identified as one simple to treat issue. Your skin might be dry, but you might also be prone to oiliness in a specific area. There could be a combination of flakiness but also a tendency for breakouts around your pores.

Because of this, pigeonholing your skin into one special type in order to follow product guidelines can often lead to doing more damage than good, because while you are treating one issue, you are doing nothing to help the other issues that come along with it. You don’t want to leave your skin confused because that is when it will start to flare up.

Play the Field

In terms of advice to avoid this happening, the best thing you can do is experiment with all of the different types of skincare products available on the market. Test products out that are supposedly designed for different purposes, and you might find that you strike on a combination of two or three different products that work to treat all your skin problems instead of just focusing on one.

The experts who are saying that attributing one type to your skin isn't smart are also saying that you effectively need a wardrobe of skincare products to cater to changes driven by internal biological factors such a hormones, diet, mood and general health as well as external factors such as climate. So in the same way you seasonally adjust your clothes, you should seasonally adjust your skincare regime accordingly.
