1

Exfoliate

The first thing you need to do to prepare your skin for spring is to get rid of the old skin cells. These dead cells are just sitting on your top layer of skin, keeping fresh air and nutrients from reaching the deeper layers. When you think about it, it’s pretty gross! Pick up a sugar scrub or make one yourself with slightly abrasive ingredients like baking powder or pure sugar. Mix in with your favorite body wash and scrub away. Be sure you’re nice to your skin; you want to remove the dead layer of skin cells, not all of the layers!

2

Clean Smart

Once you get rid of those old cells, it’s time to nurture the ones left behind. Pick a body wash that’s right for your skin type and loaded with moisturizing nutrients. These days, soaps and body washes come in all types of invigorating and refreshing scents that your skin and your nose will love. Plus, many contain extra ingredients to help wake your skin up. That’s just perfect for spring prep! If you want to liven up your current favorite body wash, try adding lemon or orange zest. It will feel great and you’ll smell amazing.

3

Seal

In colder months when the air is thin, it can really help your skin if you seal in moisture. Doing so in winter months will help ensure that your skin is good and ready when spring rolls around. Keep a bottle of your favorite skin-friendly oil in your shower. As soon as you shut off the water, pour a dime-sized amount into your hands and apply to skin. The oil seals in the body wash you’ve just used.

4

Moisturize

Once you scrub-a-dub-dub, you need to apply more moisture to your skin. Pick a thick lotion like cocoa butter or one that contains shea butter. Apply it to your skin just out of the shower while your pores are still open. This will give you the best results and keep your skin moisturized and supple.

5

Drink Water

This is the ultimate piece of beauty advice. Your body is made up mostly of water, and it’s so important to replenish that stock. Water helps clear up skin. The water you drink is divided up for your whole body, and that includes your skin. So drink up! The more hydrated you are, the brighter and healthier your skin will be.

Soak

Now, if all of these steps aren’t enough there is a way to kick things up a notch. Start a warm bath. Next, sprinkle in baking soda. Yep, the same kind you keep in your pantry. If you have it, add a cup or two of warm milk, as close to whole as you have on hand. Add a few drops of your favorite oil and you have a bath fit for Cleopatra. Soaking in the bath will allow your pores to basically drown in moisture rich elements. Be sure and pat your skin dry with a soft towel and moisturize once you’re all cleaned up.

7

Sun

Let there be light! When adding color to your skin in preparation for spring and summer months, the most important thing is to be safe. Sun screen and protections like hats, scarves and sunglasses are essential. Should you choose to tan the artificial way, select a trusted professional tanning salon. Start low and work your way up as far as time under the lamps goes. Also, beware of topical artificial tanners and their infamous ‘orange effect.’

Just like we spring clean our homes, it’s a really great idea to spring clean our skin! Try the ideas above to get your skin good and ready for spring. Do you have any tips for preparing skin for spring? Please share!
