7 Scary Ways Sugar Totally Ruins Your Skin ...

I’m a huge fan of avoiding refined and added sugars for many reasons, which includes the multitudes of ways sugar ruins your skin. During my teens, I was overweight, had severe acne, suffered depression and my skin looked older than it does now. Ironically, I was simultaneously addicted to sugar. In my early twenties, I dropped all added and refined carbohydrates and sugar from my diet and miraculously, my skin cleared, glowed, and the added weight fell off. My depression also vanished, in what seemed like overnight. I finally felt confident in my skin again and could even go out in public with no makeup, which I never did before. While I’m not asking any of you to go on a certain diet, I will tell you that eating less sugar truly can save your skin. Check out these alarming ways sugar ruins your skin so you can get beautiful skin in no time!

Inflammation

One of the main ways sugar ruins your skin is it causes inflammation in the body. Sugar is highly acidic, and while all acidic foods can cause inflammation to some degree, sugar is one of the worst. How so? Sugar causes a rise in blood sugar levels that surge and plummet, which leads to inflammation. Any sign of inflammation in the skin will cause breakouts, so be sure to avoid refined sugars and added sugars including white sugar, brown sugar, agave syrup, molasses, maple syrup and honey if you’re prone to breakouts. Though some of these have benefits, they all contain the same amount of sugar and calories per teaspoon. Instead opt for fresh fruit or stevia, which is less acidic.

2

Wrinkles

The inflammatory properties in sugar don’t only lead to breakouts, but also to wrinkles. Sugar basically attacks the healthy, supple collagen in your skin that keeps your skin wrinkle free. Sugar basically "eats" the collagen, so to speak, on a cellular level, which leads to dehydrated, dull-looking skin. When your collagen levels are depleted, wrinkles occur.

3

Blood Sugar Imbalance

Sugar, in some form or fashion, will alter your blood sugar levels. Anytime you eat a food high in sugar, your blood sugar rises rapidly, and then falls shortly after insulin is released into your cells. This creates a huge drop in blood sugar that can make you shaky, hungry and moody. Anytime this happens, your body creates internal stress, which can lead to breakouts, or dull-looking skin. Be sure to eat plenty of fiber, protein, and healthy fats at your meals to prevent this from happening.

4

Free Radicals

Free radicals are the components that cause inflammation and disease in the body. Studies have been linked to high-sugar foods and high-sugar diets creating free radicals in the body. Anti-oxidants are important for fighting free radicals, but that doesn’t mean you can have the best of both worlds. Eat antioxidant rich foods such as low-sugar fruits and veggies in place of sugar so that you can include more antioxidants in your diet and limit the harmful sugary foods.

5

Redness and Rashes

One way that sugar ruins the skin is it can cause redness and irritation. You can also blame this on the inflammatory properties in sugar. If you suffer from rashes or are prone to yeast imbalances in the body, it could be because you are eating too much sugar. Rashes can be a sign of yeast imbalance, and redness occurs mainly from inflammation. Eliminate all refined and added sugars and focus more on beautifying green veggies and fiber rich options instead.

Dehydration

Sugar basically sucks all the water out of your cells, which can lead to dryness, puffiness and those terrible under eye circles we all hate! Sugar creates a major imbalance in your entire body. Be sure to avoid eating too much sugar on days you want to look your best. Your skin will glow and radiate in no time! Drinking plenty of water doesn’t hurt either.

7

Digestion Problems

Have you ever had a tummy ache or gas after eating sugary foods or too much sugar? You can blame that on your digestion. Believe it or not, no matter how good sugar tastes, it is quite nasty to your digestive tract. It inflames your stomach, ferments in the gut, and doesn’t digest efficiently since it can’t be broken down into nutrients the body can use outside of simple glucose. Once the glucose is gone and your blood sugar has surged, sugar creates a toxic state for your tummy. Anytime a food doesn’t digest well, it will most likely show up through your skin. Eliminating sugar usually leads to a better functioning digestive tract, along with less food cravings, which leads to better skin.

Eating less refined and added sugars is a great way to start eating healthier, but also a wonderful way to save your skin. Not all foods react the same with every person, so be sure to pay careful attention what foods you can tolerate, and which ones you can’t. Do you follow a low-sugar lifestyle?
