Right Products

The first step in treating dry skin is to check that you are using the right products. Dry skin needs creams and lotions with a thicker consistency. Avoid using anything that is too harsh, in case it makes your skin worse. Ingredients like lanolin, mineral oil and glycerin will all help your skin retain moisture.

2

Exfoliation

Your dry skin needs exfoliating to help improve it, as you need to get rid of those dead dry cells. There's no sense in trying to throw moisture at dead skin. Avoid products that are harsh, as it will further irritate your skin instead of helping it retain moisture. Use a gentle scrub, and then follow up with your moisturiser. Use a scrub once a week.

3

Hydration

Dry skin needs plenty of hydration from moisturisers. Use a lovely thick cream, and make sure that it is absorbed well. Apply more if necessary. Reapply regularly, especially after you wash your hands; they will soon get dry and stripped of moisture otherwise. If your hands are in water frequently, use gloves or apply a barrier cream to protect them.

4

Treatments

Did you know that your face isn't the only part of you that can benefit from a mask? You can also use a mask on your hands, which is ideal if they get particularly dry (hands get washed more often than the rest of our body, so it's no wonder that they're often the part of us that suffers most from dry skin).

5

Water Temperature

Do you love a long soak in a hot bath? The problem with hot baths and showers is that they take the oil out of your skin. Switch to warm temperatures instead, and don't soak in the tub for hours. Showers are definitely better if you have dry skin. And moisturise while your skin is still slightly damp, as the cream will be better absorbed and retained.

Nutrition

Dry skin should not only be treated from the outside. You also need to nourish it from within. Eat plenty of foods that are rich in omega-3, such as oily fish like salmon and flaxseed. You should also ensure that you're drinking plenty of water; if you aren't consuming enough, your skin is going to suffer, as other organs will get the water first.

7

Moisturise Regularly

I have to confess to being a bit slapdash about applying moisturiser, so it's no wonder that my skin tends to get a bit dry. I really do need to be more consistent and apply every day. Get into the habit of moisturising regularly to stop your skin from getting dry, and always apply cream after washing your hands. It's helpful to keep a bottle of hand cream in your bag.

Dry skin can seem very difficult to deal with, but these simple steps should help improve your skin considerably. Our skin often reacts to neglect and environmental factors. So make your moisturiser a regular part of your routine. Have you found any unusual ways of improving dry skin?
