Most experts will tell you that you should slather on the SPF about 30 minutes before you head outside.

That allows the product to sink into your skin and gives the ingredients a chance to start working.

A sunscreen with titanium oxide or zinc oxide will begin working much more quickly so it might be a better bet if you find yourself waiting too long.
