1

Cleanse

A sure way to get the most out of your face mask is to cleanse your skin before you apply it. I used to apply my masks without washing my face first since I was going to wash it off anyway, but learned that oily or uncleansed skin can impede the delivery of the nutrients in the mask. You can take it a step further and exfoliate, also. Hey, we pay good money for these face masks, you might as well get the most out of it!

2

Read Instructions

It doesn’t matter if you’ve applied a zillion masks in your lifetime, they aren’t all the same so make sure you read the instructions on the package before you throw that baby on. It might only be meant to stay on your face for a certain amount of time, need to be applied to wet or dry skin or there might even be ingredients that don’t agree with your skin. Either way, taking the time to read the label is worth it.

3

Test

Just like reading the instructions, testing the mask out might seem like a waste of time since you’re a seasoned mask user, but there’s nothing worse than having a bad reaction on your face. Take a few minutes to test it out on your arm before you apply it to your face and if there’s no reaction after a few hours, you’re good. I realize it’s not as easy to do with sheet masks, but they typically contain a ton of product so you can dab that on and see if your skin is okay with it.

4

Avoid Your Eyes

This might be very obvious, but it can be very easy to forget when you’re in the middle of applying your mask. The skin around your eyes is very delicate and sensitive so using a deep pore cleanser or clay mask around that area isn’t going to do it any favors, plus you don’t want to get in your eye. The same goes for sheet masks - make sure the holes in the mask fit properly around your eye area or cut them to make it bigger.

5

Time It

It can be easy to get caught up watching TV, talking on the phone or reading while you’re wearing your mask but it’s very important that you don’t forget to take it off once the recommended time is up. It might not be such a big deal with sheet masks, but you don’t want to wait for face masks to start getting too dry or flaky as it can end up irritating your skin. Plus, there usually isn’t a benefit to leaving on masks longer than recommended.

Get Even

When you’re applying your mask, make sure you have a nice, even coat. You also want to make sure you’re using enough. Unless the instructions say to apply a thin layer, don’t short your skin by not applying enough. You want to ensure that all areas of your face gets equal attention. If you’re using a sheet mask, make sure it fits properly over your face. Sometimes, the openings for the eyes, nose and mouth are a little off, but you can always make a few snips and spread it out.

7

Rinse Away

Once it’s time to rinse off the mask, follow the instructions on the mask to remove it. Most times, you’ll want to gently rinse with warm water and pat dry, not rub your skin with a clean towel. Make sure you’re using a clean towel otherwise you could be contaminating your clean skin!

8

Massage

If you used a sheet mask, don’t forget to massage in any extra product on the sheet into your skin. Those things are usually soaked so you shouldn’t have a hard time getting some more liquid and applying it to your skin. I usually try to get my neck and décolletage so they get some love, too!

9

Store Correctly

Last but not least, make sure you’re storing your face masks properly. Although we tend to store our beauty items in our bathrooms, some ingredients might not do so well in a hot bathroom that’s not well ventilated. Most masks do okay in room temperature, but if your expensive facial mask jar is sitting in the sunlight all the time, it’s time for it to relocate. Also, if you’re trying to treat puffiness or you’re just hot, try storing your mask in the fridge for a little while to cool off!

I hope you were able to pick up some helpful tips on getting the most out of your sheet mask. They’re a big part of my skin care regimen and I want to make sure I’m using them properly and in the most effective way. Do you have any tips on using masks?
